The Social Dimensions of Climate Change Adaptation and Coastal Reclamation: Comparative Prospects in Urban Asia

The project, funded by the Social Science Research Council (USA) and the Henry Luce Foundation, investigates the socio-political dimensions of coastal land reclamation as a climate change adaptation strategy in urban Asia. It compares approaches in Japan, the Philippines, and Singapore, emphasizing the balance between adaptation, environmental issues, and socio-economic impacts. The study explores how land reclamation affects urban resilience, social justice, and disaster risk management, aiming to inform more equitable adaptation strategies. Collaborative research and field visits form the core methods will generate academic insights, public awareness, and future research directions on the suitability and sustainability of land reclamation as an adaptation option in coastal areas in the region.
