Clusters & Programmes

Research at ARI is primarily structured thematically around a series of multidisciplinary clusters. The Institute also hosts – and is actively engaged in expanding – research programmes beyond the established cluster structure. Click on each banner or box to find out more.

The six clusters serve as thematic platforms for bringing researchers together across disciplinary and other conventional scholarly partitions. Clusters are led by eminent researchers in the field, most of whom are tenured faculty members part-seconded on joint appointments from their home departments in NUS. Cluster leaders provide the stability and experience necessary for implementing longer-term plans of the Institute, while members on shorter-term appointments add agility and vibrancy to the ARI community. With the active involvement of Associates from across campus and internationally, each cluster pursues its own research agenda but also remains open to cross-cutting initiatives and collaboration.

Programmes

ARI’s three research programmes sustain strategic initiatives beyond the structure and funding cycles of the research clusters. Funded variously through generous gifts or international partnership arrangements, the programmes either cross-cut existing cluster research themes or pursue stand-alone agendas. Each of the programmes extends the Institute’s impact and visibility beyond the scholarly research activities of established research clusters.
