Venue | : | National Library Board Singapore |
This lecture series is organized by the National Library Board Singapore, in collaboration with the Journal of Southeast Asian Studies, Department of History and Asia Research Institute at the National University of Singapore.
ABSTRACT
Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles was the man who led the expedition that founded colonial Singapore and conceptualised many of the early institutions that developed the trade port after 1819. But it was the subsequent depiction and commemoration of Raffles that transformed him from controversial and bankrupt East India Company administrator to heroic icon of British imperialism.
Hear from Associate Professor Timothy P. Barnard as he surveys and analyses the creation of an imperial icon, and how that justified British presence in the region and larger imperial history, which continues to echo in the modern nation-state of Singapore and its history today.
