Programme & Abstracts (Finalized)

The 16th Graduate Forum is one of the flagship events of the Asia Research Institute (ARI). This event provides a platform for graduate students from around the world working on Southeast Asia to communicate and interact, as they mature into the next generation of academic leaders. The sessions which allow them to present their work are organised thematically around the fields broadly reflecting the core research strengths of ARI, including the Asian dynamics of religion, politics, economy, gender, culture, language, migration, urbanism, science and technology, identities, population and social change. The three-day Forum concludes the Asian Graduate Student Fellowship Programme 2021, which brings 34 graduate students together virtually for a six-week period of research, mentoring and participation in an academic writing course.

This year, there are two components to the Graduate Forum:

5-7 JULY | SKILLS BASED SESSIONS
Open to the Graduate Forum Students and Invited Participants only
The week prior to the forum is dedicated to skills based sessions during which senior scholars will address various topics such as how to get published in peer-reviewed journals, how to develop research proposals, how to do research during a pandemic, and how to take care of your mental health as an early career scholar.

12-14 JULY | GRADUATE FORUM WITH KEYNOTE ADDRESSES & STUDENTS’ PRESENTATIONS
Open for all to attend
During these three days, graduate students will present their work in thematically organised sessions. In addition, there will be keynote lectures offered by Prof Patcharin Lapanun (Khon Kaen University), Dr Farabi Fakih (Gadjah Mada University) and Dr David Kloos (Royal Netherlands Institute for Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies).

BACKGROUND

ARI was established as a university-level institute in July 2001 as one of the strategic initiatives of the National University of Singapore (NUS). It aims to provide a world-class focus and resource for research on the Asian region. ARI engages the social sciences broadly defined, and especially interdisciplinary frontiers between and beyond disciplines. One of ARI’s aims is to foster research on Southeast Asia, in particular by scholars from the region.
