ABSTRACT

Population aging is a global phenomenon. As the increase of the oldest old in the world, the number of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia (ADRD) also increases. In 2013, 44 million individuals suffered from ADRD, the number is expected to increase to 150 million in 2050 (Alzheimer’s Disease International). In the next three decades, the majority of the dementia cases will come from low- and middle-income countries. AD is devastating for individuals and families both financially and emotionally. In order to meeting the challenge of ADRD, more and more recent geriatric research is focused in the following areas: 1) Increasing attention on nonpharmacological approach, such as behavioral interventions to alleviate behavioral symptoms of the disease, and improve quality of care for person with ADRD and their family members. 2) Interdisciplinary collaboration. More nursing research is conducted by collaborating with other disciplines. 3) Person-centered care. Each individual may have very different care needs and personal preferences, it is important for us to think about how we deliver tailored interventions to meet the needs of persons with ADRD and their family members. 4) Use of technology. Older adults are getting more familiar with smart phones, and internet. In addition, sensory technology is also become widely used. As a scientist, we need to think about how we use technology to assist in designing a study, and also use technology for data collection and deliver interventions. 5). Increase studies on pragmatic trials.
