ABSTRACT

Pillars of the Field is the Mainland Southeast Asia Study Group’s interview series that features the life-stories of influential scholars, intellectuals, and practitioners who contributed to the development of Southeast Asian Studies. Through their personal accounts, guest speakers reflect upon the development of the field, giving insights into the contexts, ideas, debates, individuals and institutions that shaped it. Professor Winichakhul’s live interview will touch on his role in the shaping of Thai Studies, Southeast Asian Studies and Asian Studies in Asia.

 

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Thongchai Winichakul is Emeritus Professor of History at University of Wisconsin-Madison. His book, Siam Mapped (1994), was awarded the Harry J Benda Prize from the Association for Asian Studies (AAS, USA) and the Grand Prize from the Asian Affairs Research Council (Japan). He was a recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Award in 1994. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2003 and was the President of the Association for Asian Studiesby in 2013/14. His research interests are in cultural and intellectual history of Siam’s modernity. His new book, Moments of Silence: The Unforgetting of the 1976 Massacre in Bangkok (2019) is a history of memories of the tragedy he witnessed. He also publishes seven books and several articles in Thai. He is a well-known critic of Thai political and social issues.
