ABSTRACT

The Hunger Report: An In-Depth Look at Food Insecurity in Singapore was the first nationally representative study conducted in 2020 on the not so visible issue of food insecurity in Singapore. The study documented the extent, severity, causes and consequences of food insecurity in the country. Additionally, it revealed the barriers to effective food assistance and made recommendations that may help tackle this issue in a systemic way.

Building on the work of Hunger Report of 2020, the authors embarked on the first intervention study of its kind in Singapore in 2022, delving into how the food situation of previously identified food-insecure households has changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through surveys, Hunger Report II reveals the impact COVID-19 has had on a small sample of food-insecure families in Singapore. The authors also administered a Needs Toolkit to understand the unique needs and preferences of each food-insecure household. They then explored the impact of autonomy in food support through an intervention element in the study.
