ABSTRACT
This roundtable will examine facets of development and good governance in three different countries: China, the Philippines, and Tanzania. In China, “good governance” is deeply rooted in Confucianism, but is significantly shaped by foreign discourses. Intertwined with development, corruption and anti-corruption movements will be explored in the Philippines through ethnographic fieldwork. Lastly, the promise of efficiency through privatization, growth through building booms and infrastructural overhauls, will be juxtaposed against the daily realities of those living in the urban landscapes of Tanzania. These three talks will explore aspects of political consensus, cultural logics, trust and mistrust of institutions, and neoliberal development in the context of development and good governance.
