ABSTRACT

Over the past century, Pentecostalism has emerged as a major force within Asian Christianity. While engaging in dialogue with global Christian movements, Pentecostal expressions of devotion, congregational life, and theology have fostered the rise of new Christian movements across Asia— Asian movements that have significantly shaped both local societies and the broader Christian landscape of the continent.

Over time, Pentecostal churches in Asia have developed rich theological discourses and active forms of social engagement, positioning them as a dynamic and influential component of Asian Christianity. This evolution has given rise to a growing body of scholarship on Asian Pentecostalism and has drawn the attention of scholars from various disciplines, including sociology, political science, theology, and history, who study religion in the Asian context.

This presentation will offer an overview of research published over the past decade on Asian Pentecostalisms, emphasizing the field’s interdisciplinary nature and reflecting on how current trends may open up diverse avenues of inquiry in the coming decade.
