ABSTRACT

For 25 years, ARI has shaped global conversations from a perspective anchored in Asia. At a moment of epochal geopolitical disruption, this lecture turns to inter-Asian ideas about what is now called planetary health. It shows how that term has rich antecedents in Asian traditions of political and environmental thought, and suggests that the seeds of a more sustainable and resilient global order are most likely to be found in Asia.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Sunil Amrith is Henry R. Luce Director, the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies; Vice Provost for International Affairs; Renu and Anand Dhawan Professor of History; Professor, Yale School of the Environment. Amrith’s research focuses on the movements of people and the ecological processes that have connected South and Southeast Asia, and has expanded to encompass global environmental history.

Jiat-Hwee Chang is Research Leader of the Science, Technology, and Society (STS) Cluster at the Asia Research Institute and Dean’s Chair Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture at the National University of Singapore. is an interdisciplinary researcher working at the intersections of architecture, environment and STS.

Jolene Lin is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, and Director of the Asia-Pacific Centre for Environmental Law. Jolene is also an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore. Jolene’s research focuses on climate change litigation and transnational climate change law.

Ida Ayu Sri Suya Patni is Co-Founder and Commissioner of Griya Luhu, an Indonesian digital waste management startup based in Bali. Established initially as an environmental community in Gianyar in 2017, the organisation transitioned into a leading digital waste bank service that helps communities and villages manage waste more sustainably.

Vineeta Sinha is Director of Asia Research Institute and Professor of Anthropology in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, National University of Singapore. Her research focuses on Hindu religiosity in the diaspora, religion-state encounters, religion, commodification and consumption processes, Hinduism’s entanglement with materiality and visuality, histories of Sociology and Anthropology, critical pedagogy, women’s structural location and leadership in academia and decolonising knowledge production.

ABOUT THE ARI 25TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT SERIES 

Marking twenty-five years of the Asia Research Institute (ARI) at the National University of Singapore, the ARI 25th Anniversary Event Series brings together scholars, public intellectuals, and partners to examine some of the most significant current and future issues facing Asia and their wider global implications. The anniversary program comprises three events: a public lecture and two thematic roundtables, each addressing a major set of contemporary and emerging questions that intersect with ARI’s research mission and open conversations between academic research and the wider public, policy, and professional communities in Singapore, across Asia, and internationally. Together, the events showcase ARI’s role as a platform that brings research into conversation with the questions that matter to Singapore, Asia, and the wider world.
