ABSTRACT
This roundtable commemorates the illustrious life and work of Professor John Miksic, whose scholarship profoundly shaped the study of Southeast Asian archaeology, history, and heritage. Bringing together colleagues, students, and scholars influenced by his work, the event will reflect John’s intellectual contributions and his enduring impact on the field. The event will also provide an opportunity to share personal reflections and memories of an amazing scholar, teacher, mentor and colleague whose generosity and curiosity inspired generations on students and researchers.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Chong Guan Kwa is Senior Fellow at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He joined its Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies at its inception in 1996 as Head of External Relations, coordinating and growing the Institute’s networking with other policy institutions in the region. As Senior Fellow, he continues to support a series of regional security projects with other regional institutions. These range from maritime security to non-traditional security issues of energy security, cybersecurity, nuclear energy safety and security and biosecurity.
Kelvin Ang is Director of Conservation Management at the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore (URA). Kelvin has two decades of experience in architecture and conservation at the URA (Singapore’s national planning, land use and building conservation authority). He obtained his Graduate Diploma (Architecture) and MSc in Sustainable Heritage, both at the Bartlett School, University College London. Kelvin has led a multi-disciplinary team to deliver several key conservation projects including the legal protection of over 700 buildings and the showcase restoration of the 19th century ‘National University of Singapore – Baba House’ at 157 Neil Road. His portfolio includes public education and partnership programmes, industry development, regulatory and enforcement work.
Mohamed Effendy is a lecturer at the Department of Southeast Asian Studies, National University of Singapore. Trained as a historian, he has wide interests that include pre-colonial Southeast Asian history, colonial Southeast Asian history, post-colonial and modern Southeast Asian history, as well as martial arts studies.
Geok Yian Goh is Associate Professor of History at Nanyang Technological University. Her research interests include archaeology and early history of Southeast Asia, with particular focus on Burma, Indonesia, and Singapore; premodern communication, cultural and trade networks, and study of early urbanization. She teaches undergraduate courses on premodern Southeast Asia, Myanmar, Singapore, and world history. Her postgraduate courses include courses on doing research in Southeast Asia and theories in urbanization and state formation. She obtained her PhD in History and her MA in History from the University of Hawai`i, Manoa in 2007 and 2002 respectively. Her BA (Hons) was in Southeast Asian Studies from the National University of Singapore.
