ABSTRACT

The divorce level, measured by the crude divorce rate (CDR), has increased dramatically in both East and West over the past few decades but has recently appeared to fall or level off in some countries. We conducted a decomposition analysis on the changes in CDRs over the past two decades for five countries, namely, the UK, Australia, Taiwan, South Korea, and Singapore to identify the important elements. It seems that the impact of shrinkage of the married population is more significant that in reduction in divorce risk. Furthermore, we have computed the marriage age dependent lifetime risk of divorce in these five countries. The difference in divorce pattern between east and west countries is discussed.
