The workshop is co-hosted by the Asia Research Institute and Tembusu College of the National University of Singapore; with funding from the D. Kim Foundation.

The D. Kim Foundation, which is globally known for endowing graduate programs in the History of Science, Technology and Medicine relating to East Asia, and for providing scholarships and other support to students in that field, held its 2015 annual meeting in Singapore.

In conjunction with that meeting, the Asia Research Institute and Tembusu College at NUS hosted a one-day workshop on January 5, featuring five papers by younger Singaporean and Singapore-based scholars researching the history of science, technology, and medicine in East or Southeast Asia.

Five distinguished professors serving on the Foundation’s board – Prof Shigehisa Kuriyama of Harvard University, Prof Angela Leung of Hong Kong University, Prof Stuart Leslie of Johns Hopkins University, Prof Takehiko Hashimoto of Tokyo University, and Emeritus Prof Christopher Cullen of Cambridge University – provided commentary and feedback.

The event also included the Foundation’s chair, Prof Kim Dong-Won, formerly the Dean of Humanities at the Korean Advanced Institute for Science and Technology (KAIST), who is at NUS for his second semester as Ngee Ann Kongsi Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tembusu and Visiting Senior Research Fellow at ARI. The event was chaired by Assoc Prof Gregory Clancey, and the audience included members of the ARI STS and Asian Urbanisms clusters, as well as staff from Tembusu College and Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
