ABSTRACT

In this talk, Dr Norbert Winnige, research coordinator at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity (MPI MMG), will present an overview on Digital Humanities activities at the Göttingen Campus–Göttingen Campus is an alliance between the university and local non-university research institutions–and the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity.

The Göttingen Centre for Digital Humanities (GCDH, http://www.gcdh.de/en/) is the cross-faculty institution of the Göttingen Campus that coordinates, carries out, and further develops research, teaching, and infrastructure activities in the field of Digital Humanities (DH). The Göttingen State and University Library (SUB) lists almost 25 research projects currently run by the Department for Research and Development (https://www.sub.uni-goettingen.de/en/projects-research/projects-a-z/current-projects/#c4247) mostly focusing on DH. The MPI MMG is a partner in selected cooperation projects with GCDH and SUB, especially in the Humanities Data Center (HDC) project which is trying to develop a long term environment for the preservation of research data from the Humanities enabling the reusability of these data.

DH research at MPI MMG is mainly focusing on different forms of data visualization (http://media.mmg.mpg.de/). Several projects searched to develop alternative ways for presenting patterns in international migration, others were aimed at “Visualising superdiversity” through social networks” or visualizing the probability of “Intergroup contact” based on a regression analysis. Within the GCDH the MPI MMG is running the newly founded Campus laboratory on “Visualization”.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Norbert Winnige holds a PhD in in History from the University of Göttingen (1993). His thesis focused on social and economic history in the Early Modern Period. After holding a PostDoc at the Technical University Braunschweig he became a project coordinator at the Research Institute for Prussian History in Berlin (1997-2000). In 2000 he joined the Max Planck Institute for History (Göttingen) working on informatics in historical research, since 2007 he is the head of IT and scientific coordinator at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity (Göttingen).

Norbert Winnige is conducting computer based research in the humanities for almost 30 years, which includes working with software for statistical analysis, designing and operating relational and object oriented databases, using Geographical Information Systems and authoring web-based digital editions. Currently he is running third party projects on Digital Humanities (DH) with partners at Göttingen Campus and beyond while coordinating and supporting DH based projects at MPI MMG as well.
