ABSTRACT
Singapore proclaims itself “pro-family”, but this claim bears further examination and contestation. A number of our laws and policies destabilise the family lives of marginalised groups such as single parents and transnational couples, sometimes in the name of policing or preserving notional family structures. Drawing on the Association of Women for Action and Research’s (AWARE) experience in research, advocacy and direct services, this talk explores these inequalities and their impact, as well as civil society efforts to address them, in light of Singapore’s international legal obligations to eliminate gender discrimination pursuant to the Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jolene Tan is Head of Advocacy & Research at AWARE. She has previously worked as a solicitor in England & Wales and (in a non-legal capacity) for a UK-based prison reform organization. She co-founded No To Rape, a volunteer-led campaign against marital immunity for rape in Singapore. She holds a BA in Law from Trinity Hall, Cambridge and an LLM from Harvard Law School. Her first novel, A Certain Exposure, was published by Epigram Books in 2014.
