ABSTRACT
This talk is an informal reflection on a decade of formal consulting on the Fukushima nuclear accident and its aftermath. Since 2012 I have traveled annually, and sometimes multiple times a year, to Fukushima and other ‘nuclear’ sites at the invitation of agencies and groups trying to make sense of radiation’s effect on human health. I began this journey as a rapporteur who knew nothing about radiation or nuclear power. I have since become a consultant, a delegate, a member, a confidante, and by fits and starts, an expert. What I have learned in these cascading roles – about radiation, society, politics, and my own assumptions, beliefs, and limitations — will form the basis for my presentation. As this talk is also meant as a capstone on my thirteen years as research leader of the STS Cluster at ARI, I will also have a few reflections on “Science, Technology, and Society” as an historic and ongoing interdisciplinary project, and why it remains vital.
