This lecture series is organized by the National Library Board Singapore, in collaboration with the Journal of Southeast Asian Studies, Department of History and Asia Research Institute at the National University of Singapore.

ABSTRACT

There is a subtle difference between saying Singapore was a former British colony and saying Singapore was colonised. Much of Singapore history has been a response to its nation-building efforts, producing histories that seek to explain the post-1965 Singapore nation.

Join us for this session and explore the histories of colonial Singapore and the ongoing efforts to expland our understanding of colonialism as it evolved in Singapore.

Hear from Dr Ho Chi Tim as he presents an argument for a purposeful approach to the research and teaching of the colonial period in Singapore.

SPEAKER

Ho Chi Tim has a PhD in Southeast Asian history from the University of Hawai’i at Mãnoa and has published on Singapore’s social welfare and nation-building history.

CHAIRPERSON

S.R. Joey Long is Associate Professor of History at the National University of Singapore.
