This conference brings together scholars, practitioners, and enthusiasts from around the globe to delve into the rich historical evolution, policy frameworks, and innovative pedagogical approaches related to the Hokkien language. The presentations fall under three themes:

  • The History theme will provide a comprehensive examination of Hokkien’s origins and development. Presentations will cover its early roots in Fujian Province, migration patterns that spread the language across Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, and other regions, and the impact of historical events on its evolution. This theme seeks to illuminate the historical context that has shaped Hokkien and contributed to its role in diverse Chinese diaspora communities.
  • The Policy theme will address the current and historical language policies affecting Hokkien across different regions. Discussions will focus on government and institutional approaches to language preservation, promotion, and regulation. Topics will include the role of policy in the revitalization efforts of Hokkien, challenges faced in multilingual societies, and the impact of policy decisions on language vitality and community engagement.
  • The Pedagogy theme will explore effective teaching methodologies, curriculum development, and educational resources for Hokkien. This theme aims to highlight innovative approaches to language instruction, both in formal educational settings and community-based learning environments. Presentations will address strategies for engaging learners, integrating technology into language education, and fostering intergenerational transmission of Hokkien.

The conference aims to foster an interdisciplinary dialogue on the historical, policy, and pedagogical aspects of the Hokkien language. It provides a platform for sharing research, case studies, and best practices among experts and practitioners, to promote collaboration and develop strategies for the promotion of Hokkien.
