ABSTRACT

FBOs have a long history of responding to people in need (Ferris, 2005), particularly people at a grass root level in dire situations where the government often could not or fail to provide assistance to them (Shaw and Katsuihciro, 2004). Thus, the discussion aims at describing the role of Muhammadiyah organization, one of the largest Moslem organizations in Indonesia, and its challenges in strengthening capacity in order to have more effective and efficient humanitarian assistance. Muhammadiyah, founded in 1912, is a FBO/NGO/CSO which has extensively extended its mission to take on a role in disaster relief and response in the past decades. Muhammadiyah has an estimate of 35 million members, which contributes to the ability in providing robust humanitarian assistance. Yet, the capacity for emergency relief is still lacking due to inadequacy of knowledge and skills as well as resources.
