Making Identity Count in Asia is a three-year project funded by Singapore’s Social Science Research Council for 2017-2020. The research focuses on the national identities of the members of ASEAN, as well as South Korea, Hong Kong, China, Japan, and Taiwan, in the years 2010 and 2015. At the conference, authors of the papers on each country’s national identity will present their findings and discussants with regional expertise will offer advice for how to move these papers forward. This project is unique in using discourse analysis to recover the predominant elite and mass conceptions of national identity in each country. In the case of Singapore, in particular, separate analyses were performed for English, Chinese, Malay, and Tamil texts. The works presented will provide the foundation for publications on individual countries over times, relations between and among pairs and groups of countries, as well as the region’s identity relations with the world writ large.
