A research forum organized by the College of Alice & Peter Tan, National University of Singapore; in collaboration with the Asia Research Institute, and the FASS Social Science and Policy Cluster.

This forum brings together NUS scholars and CAPT community partners invested in understanding and alleviating the challenges that migrant workers face. The forum will include non-profit organizations that work with internal and international migrants, as well as academics who study issues of gender and migration, occupational health, and precarious work. This forum serves the interests of these different groups in the following ways:

Community partners can present ongoing research aimed at improving or developing the organization’s advocacy strategies and services. The forum will allow partners to network with scholars who can help contextualize their findings in a broader field of study, or compare their challenges with issues in other contexts.

Researchers from NUS can share their own academic work with practitioners who provide important critique based on on-the-ground knowledge and experience. Moderators and presenters in the forum will comprise researchers from the Asia Research Institute (ARI) and the Social Science and Policy Cluster at the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Lastly, the forum provides faculty and students with an opportunity to see the intersection between academic work and practice, an important aspect of CAPT’s emphasis on linking higher education and community engagement.

This knowledge exchange is in line with the theme of the CAPT Student Symposium 2018 (CAPTiSS), which emphasizes sharing spaces for diverse approaches and communities.

The forum will be a one-day event comprising three panel presentations. Each panel comprises two community partners and one representative from Asia Research Institute. 

PANEL 1: MAKING WORK VISIBLE
This panel will highlight the challenges faced by migrant workers caught in precarious work conditions often invisible to the general public. Presentations will feature the double-edged sword of using documentation as a means of making work visible and protecting migrants from possible exploitation.

PANEL 2: MAINTAINING MIGRANT HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
This panel will focus on the threats tomigrant workers’ well-being, and the different strategies that NGOs andmigrants themselves had taken on in maintaining physical and mental health.

PANEL 3: RECOGNISING MIGRANT HOUSEHOLDS AND COMMUNITIES OF ORIGIN
While much attention has been placed on migrants within their host societies, researchers have long argued that migration also impacts those who have never left. This panel features research that seeks to understand the issues and perspectives of migrants’ families within their countries of origin.
