The use of mixed-methods in social science research has increased over the last few decades but there remains considerable debate about how best to define and implement mixed-methods. Mixed-methods research is complex and good mixed-methods research requires competence across methods that are not easily integrated. This interactive workshop will review the nature and challenges of designing and conducting mixed-methods research by considering:

  • What is mixed-methods research?
  • Why use mixed-methods?
  • The challenges of mixed-methods research
  • The aims, strengths and weaknesses of quantitative and qualitative methods
  • Designing and conducting (good) mixed-method research

The workshop will provide insight into both the promises and pitfalls of doing mixed-methods research, as well as the benefits of understanding and overcoming its challenges. Participants are welcome to bring along examples of mixed-methods designs from their own research.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

She is a long-time advocate of mixed-methods research, having published a discussion paper on the topic in 1999. She has extensive experience in mixed-methods research design, data collection and analysis, and continues to engage in debates about the philosophical underpinnings of mixed-methods research.
