Programme

This workshop is jointly organized by the Migration Clusters at Asia Research Institute, and Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, National University of Singapore; and Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany.

Ageing, as a process and life course stage, is characterised by complex webs of care that extend across generations and national borders. Aged persons require care but they may also be providers of care for others. Care is traditionally treated as reproductive work that is ensconced within the family or community. Yet the transnationalisation of care is reaching into a variety of sectors, countries and contexts through processes of migration. Migration changes intergenerational care obligations and perceptions towards the role of aged persons in societies; in turn these influence the allocation of resources and reconstitutes models of elderly care. So far research on ageing tends to be contained within national-level frameworks. This arises from the premise that ‘ageing societies’ is often perceived as a problem for national policy makers, or perceptions that the elderly are less internationally mobile than younger persons. But increasingly, the elderly are moving across national borders either to provide care or to receive care. The global circulation of concepts such as ‘active ageing’ or ‘successful ageing’ can lead to the development of a “silver economy” on a macro level, but frustration and misunderstanding on a micro level. As a process that happens across international borders, ageing remains an underdeveloped field both in terms of empirical research and wider theorisation.

This is the third of a series of workshops between Humboldt-University of Berlin and the National University of Singapore. The first workshop centred on the theme of ‘Migration, Diversity and Encounter in Asia and Europe’ and it was hosted by NUS in October 2015, while the second workshop on ‘Diversity Encounters: Intersectional and Post-colonial Perspectives’ was held and hosted by Humboldt University of Berlin in May 2016. Our third workshop will highlight experiences of ageing and migration in the Asia-Pacific and Europe.
