ABSTRACT

This roundtable discussion critically examines the emerging legacies of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s political project. Contributors to a new edited volume – A Duterte Reader (2017) – take stock of current crises, including the controversial ‘war on drugs’ and the occupation of Marawi by terrorists claiming allegiance to ISIS. The discussion will focus on how state policies and rhetoric shape the character of Philippine democracy, as well as the sociological bases of the President’s unwavering popularity.

ABOUT THE PARTICIPANTS

Nicole Curato is an Australian Research Council Fellow at the Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance at the University of Canberra. She is the editor of the Philippine Sociological Review, and her work on Philippine politics and society has been published in Journal of Contemporary Asia, International Political Science Review, Qualitative Inquiry, and elsewhere. She is the editor of A Duterte Reader: Critical Essays on Rodrigo Duterte’s Early Presidency (Ateneo de Manila University Press and Cornell University Press, 2017).

Jayson Lamchek is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the NUS Faculty of Law, and a contributor to A Duterte Reader (2017). Prior to completing his PhD at The Australian National University, he worked in the Philippines as a lawyer, an associate at the Public Interest Law Center, and a legislative advocacy researcher at the Legal Rights and Natural Resources Center. He is currently writing Human Rights-Compliant Counterterrorism: Myth-making and Reality in the Philippines and Indonesia (under contract with Cambridge University Press), based on his doctoral research.

Veronica Gregorio is a PhD student at the Department of Sociology, National University of Singapore. She completed her MA Women and Development Studies at the University of the Philippines, and she is currently working on the transnational responses of Filipinos to Duterte’s remarks on women.

Cleve V. Arguelles is Assistant Professor and Chair of the Political Science Program at the University of the Philippines Manila. He writes on political participation, populism, and democracy, and is one of the contributors to A Duterte Reader (2017). He is also lead editor of #KabataanNgayon: Filipino Youth and Social Change (forthcoming).

Oona Paredes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Southeast Asian Studies at the National University of Singapore. Her publications include A Mountain of Difference: The Lumad in Early Colonial Mindanao (Cornell SEAP, 2013), and more recently, “Custom and Citizenship in the Philippine Uplands,” in Citizenship and Democratization in Postcolonial Southeast Asia, edited by Henk Schulte Nordholt, et al. (Brill, 2016). An anthropologist by training, her current field research focuses on the mythology and practice of indigenous governance among Higaunon Lumads in present-day Mindanao.
