ABSTRACT
Housing prices in Taiwan have nearly doubled since 2005 and led to a strong social housing movement. Social housing, a concept formerly unfamiliar to most, became a buzzword and quickly gained popularity. The talk examines how the social housing movement, since 2010, has gradually transformed the housing policies and the role of the state in housing provisions. It will discuss of the obstacles of the housing movement. The talk will try to incorporate the Amsterdam’s social housing experiences into the discussion to explore what the East Asian developmental states can learn from housing experiences in Amsterdam.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Yi-Ling Chen is an Associate Professor in Global & Area Studies and Geography at the University of Wyoming. Inspired by Susan Fainstein’s work on The Just Cities, Yi-Ling visited University of Amsterdam to study Dutch social housing with Richard Ronald. In 2016, she was visiting the Seoul Institute in South Korea, Academia Sinica in Taiwan, and David C. Lam Institute for East-West Studies at Hong Kong Baptist University. Her research interest is about the interaction of urban planning and social change, focusing on urban social movements, particularly those concerning housing access. Her published works are on housing, gender, urban movements, and regional development in Taiwan. She is editing a book on contesting urban space in East Asia (Palgrave MacMillan) and working on a comparative study on the formation of social rental housing in East Asia, Europe and the USA.
