Great Migrations: Southeast Asia and New Theorizations of Global Mobilities

This research project aims to develop new frameworks in theorizing global mobilities by conceptualising the historical and contemporary migration pathways and spaces as well as their intersections. In particular, this project treats Southeast Asia as a window and focuses on transnational Chinese migration, the movements within a trans-Islamic space as well as migration enabled or facilitated by the former imperial and colonial systems. This project critically reviews and synthesizes current scholarship on migration using both historical and contemporary documents, incorporating academic and popular materials that have been produced in non-English linguistic and cultural zones. It also aims to lay the conceptual foundation towards new theorizations on movements and mobilities.
