Plastic Waste and Women’s Household Practices in Asia and Australia

This research project aims to document how women, in different roles as homemakers, career professionals and workers, migrant domestic workers and environmental activists, are shaping the management of household plastic waste in three Asia-Pacific developed countries: Singapore, Japan and Australia. This provides the empirical context to examine the implications of household gendered labour in the consumption and disposal of plastic waste from social, historical and digital perspectives. Given that women take primary responsibilities for the care of the household in Asia and beyond, this project fosters an in-depth understanding of the role of gender, intersecting with class, occupation and nationality, in shaping household plastic waste management.
