Elaine Ho on CNA Insider: Being Singaporean

Prof Elaine Ho, Research Leader of ARI’s Migration & Mobilities cluster, appeared on CNA Insider: Being Singaporean to share insights on what shapes Singapore’s national identity and how perceptions have changed over time. She discussed survey findings showing that some Singaporeans feel the influx of new citizens has diluted national identity, as newcomers may not share the same understanding of local traditions and history. While experiences like local schools and National Service remain important rites of passage, Prof Ho highlighted how the growing presence of new citizens from countries with different national values could influence national cohesion, shared values, and Singaporeans’ sense of identity.
