Jonathan Galka receives Maritime Cultural Heritage Award

Jonathan Galka, a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Science, Technology and Society cluster at ARI, has been awarded the Maritime Cultural Heritage Award for his dissertation, “In the Nodule Provinces: A History of the Ocean that Minerals Promised.” The award, jointly sponsored by the German Maritime Museum (DSM) and its support association, recognises outstanding scientific work on maritime topics. Galka’s research explores the shifting significance of deep-sea manganese and polymetallic nodules across geology, politics, economics, and biology—particularly in the context of the Cold War, decolonization, and maritime law.
