Inter-Asia Engagements

Dr Abdul Jaleel commenced his appointment as Research Fellow in the Inter-Asia Engagements Cluster under the Muhd Alagil Endowment, with effect from 1 September 2022.

Dr Jaleel has a PhD in West Asian Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University. He explores the history, culture and intellectual traditions of Arab communities in South India in the larger context of Arabia Asia engagements. Over the last few years, he has been working for the Alagil Chair and documenting historical as well as intellectual traditions and cultural expressions of Arab societies in South India. Dr Jaleel was a Visiting Research Fellow at BGSMCS, Freie Universität Berlin and had taught West Asian Studies at the University of Kerala. His ongoing book project traces the history of religious cultivation among Muslim communities in South India through a set of categories crucial to the formation of Muslim Sufi religiosity across the historical coastal regions of the Indian Ocean.
