MESSAGE FROM CHAIR OF MANAGEMENT BOARD
Prof Chong Chi Tat
The 2009 Annual Report gives an overview of the key activities and achievements of the Asia Research Institute during the year: Several scholars have joined ARI as senior researchers; the Asian Migration Cluster has secured a large research grant from the Ministry of Education; the Science, Technology, and Society Cluster was established to become the newest research cluster of the Institute; many seminars, conferences and workshops, and public lectures were organised by the clusters or under the auspices of ARI; a major flagship event—the Inter-Asia Roundtable—was initiated; many scholarly works were published, either in journals or as books, and the ARI-Springer Asia Series was launched. The Institute was named one of the top 29 research centres of excellence in Asia by the Rockefeller Foundation, and eleven staff members were recognised for their significant contributions with distinguished professorships, convenorship or honorary positions at top universities.
All of these indicate that ARI has established itself as a major research institute in Asia on Asia. They are the result of dedicated work by members of the Institute. My congratulations to the Director Professor Lily Kong and her team, and also to the Founding Director Professor Anthony Reid, who retired from NUS in 2009, for a job well done.
