The articles in this volume address the current development and examine the role of the state in its panoply of roles, exploring the challenges and the resulting contradictions. Some of the articles explore the impact of the state as a sponsor of innovation, and its role in providing infrastructural support and incentives to new activities. Others explore the state’s increasingly significant role in managing and supporting commercial relationships. The authors explore this complexity from different theoretical perspectives and develop case studies as their focus of analysis.
