The classic secularization thesis of modernizarion has long dominated the study of religion. According to this view, modernizing societies become increasingly secular and rational in worldview, and restrict religion to a private, irrational sphere. Scholars have recently begun to question the secularization thesis, seeking continuities between the pre-modern and the modern, and destabilizing the boundary between the secular and the religious.
