For four centuries, from 1520 to 1920, the Ottoman dynasty in Turkey represented a dream for Southeast Asian Muslims; a longing for Islamic power at a time of Islamic political decline. That dream became a reality in the period 1530-70, when Aceh submitted itself to Ottoman suzerainty in return for military support against the Portuguese. Again in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the hope of help from the Ottomans inspired many acts of anti-colonial resistance.
